The sponge

Edith's teacher commented to us this past week on what a sponge she is, remembering not just what people have said during the day but exactly how they said it. The preschool and pre-K classes are beginning a group music program with an outside teacher who comes to the school once a week. This past week they had their first class. Edith was really excited to tell us about it when we picked her up. She began handing us the various materials that the teacher had distributed to each kid.

"This is the boring piece of paper that's for a grown-up to read that I wouldn't be interested in," she told us as she handed us an information sheet, and Ms. Chrissy confirmed that that was exactly how the music teacher had presented it.

As we started home in the car she started to wail from the back seat, "I'm bored!" We told her that we were only driving home and would be there in a few minutes.

"No," she explained. "The music teacher told us that a good time for listening to the CD she gave us would be if we were on a boring car ride. So I'm saying that this is a boring car ride. So let's listen to the CD."

I told her that we couldn't, because we don't have a CD player in the car.

"Oh," she said. "The music teacher didn't think of that."
