FOUR

Four years ago this evening Tom and I were padding around a hospital room enchanted with a tiny creature we'd been given to play house with. She smelled so mysteriously soft and delicious, had a red face and a shock of golden surfer girl hair, and came with lots of little accessories in a rolling cart.
And today that same creature is a lively, smart, imaginative, sensitive, strong-willed, funny girl with long skinny legs and strong capable hands, who listens to chapter books, pretends to be princesses, makes up silly rhymes on the spot, climbs trees, plants seeds, learns about animals, and sings and dances the part of a peacock in the school play. We're so proud of Edith and love her so much. She is the light--sometimes the firecracker--at the heart of our family.
More to come about her birthday celebration, after everyone has had some sleep...

What a great post. Happy FOUR, Edith! And happy four years of parenting, Gretchen and Tom.
Happy Birthday Edith!! Hardly seems possible. You taught your parents so well they did it again! The very best birthday wishes for a very wonderful 4 year old!! Hugs and love,

It's not everyone who has the doula who helped bring them into the world offering birthday wishes 4 years later! Thanks for being part of that amazing night, Crystal.
Happy fourth birthday Edith!!!
yay happy birthday!!!!!
HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY EDITH!
And congrats to her parents on four years of great parenting (and thanks, too, for chronicling it all so beautifully).
It was certainly my pleasure and sorry it didn't work out for her sister but you know what? You and Tom had everything under control from the get go. I was an awe-struck observer and honored to be there with the two of you when you welcomed Edith into this world of ours. She is an amazing little girl and I am positive her sister will be too. Your blog is wonderful and I love following it. Hugs and kisses to all,
Crystal
