Grave Alice
It seems Longfellow knew our daughter. Alice's most striking personality trait so far is her tendency to fix people in a long, studious gaze. When she is awake and alert she will observe us for minutes at a time, calmly studying our faces, our hairlines, the light behind us. Her eyes don't cross in that newborn way--adorable in its own right--but instead calmly and methodically scan the scene in front of her.
It was during one such sober study of her family that Alice was captured in the following photos (as well as about a dozen more, nearly identical).




Of course one of the trials of being a serious person is that there will always be those of a more frivolous nature who can't resist taking jabs at one's dignity:
