We interrupt this parenting program...

...to bring you a fifth-anniversary getaway weekend, brought to you (or rather, to us) by the extended Lank family, part of which generously provided babysitting and another part of which provided the condo on the Chesapeake Bay to which Tom and I beat our retreat:

Whoops. That was an old fishing shack we saw on the bay. Try this:

Why does Tom look so serene? Check out his view:

The city dock in Crisfield, Maryland, as seen from the living room of Aunt Sharon's condo:

Looking back toward the town, marina in the middle. Crisfield, the southernmost municipality in Maryland, was once the largest fishing port in the nation, with more boats registered there than anywhere in the country. It still boasts one of the East Coast's largest marinas, but the town is a comfortably sleepy little place:

And since it's her blog, and especially since she (and her grandparents) suffered through her first stomach bug over the weekend, in Mom and Dad's absence, here's a picture of the kiddo. She slept this way for almost an hour:

We love her dearly, but an uninterrupted dinner conversation with one's spouse once every couple of years is a great thing.

So happy to hear that you and Tom had a good weekend, and that everyone else survived theirs! :)

And: Crisfield? That immediately took me back about 15 or 20 years -- did you ever read "Homecoming" and "Dicey's Song" by Cynthia Voigt? (The latter won the Newbery in 1983.) The Eastern Shore of Maryland, and specifically Crisfield, figure prominently. She described the locations so vividly that I have an image in my head of that part of Maryland that really stuck with me -- never been there to see for myself, but your photos seem about right. Those were great books -- worth sharing with Edith in another 8 years or so, for sure. :)

I also immediately thought of Homecoming when I heard you went to Crisfield. I love those books and they are standing the test of time quite well.

There's also Katherine Paterson's Jacob Have I Loved, which mentions Crisfield throughout--We actually visisted the island in the middle of the Bay on which the story's primary island setting is based. So the area has inspired at least two Nerwberry medal books!
