"If you're outraged and you know it..."
We discovered yesterday that Edith knows the hand motions to a few songs. I began casually singing "If You're Happy and You Know It," and just ahead of cue, Edith clapped. When I got through the first verse, Edith clapping at the appropriate places, I started a second verse:
"If you're happy and you know it..."
Edith patted her head.
"...pat your head."
Those seemed to be the two verses she had down.
A few minutes later I started singing "The Wheels on the Bus," and she smiled and started waving her fingers back and forth. Forget the wheels--she had gone straight to the windshield wipers. I started the song a few more times over the course of the evening to see what she would do, and each time she immediately motioned the windshield wipers.
But if she understands these two songs, it's only in part. Tonight at the dinner table she was unhappy to be passed from Mama to Daddy. In fact, she didn't like it one bit. She started to pitch a fit. In the hopes of distracting her, Tom began to sing, "If you're happy and you know it..."
Edith clapped. And she continued to clap right on cue. Bit she howled and kicked the whole time. Evidently she's only figured out the meaning of the second half of the line...
