On her terms

I was told this week that overall women academics continue to start at lower salaries than their male counterparts, largely because they negotiate less effectively. Edith is honing her skills so as not to have that problem when the time comes.

This afternoon we returned from a walk to the store for groceries, after which I convinced Edith that we needed to come straight upstairs to put said groceries away, instead of going to the playground first. As I anticipated, she then got absorbed in something upstairs, such that I could get started making dinner. Until, from the living room:

"Mommy," I heard in a tone that sounded oddly familiar. "I come upstairs to put groceries away. I follow your plan. Now you follow my plan. You come sit here on the couch and play with me. Not make dinner. It's my turn."

Admirable try, kiddo. Next time you'll know to establish the terms before complying with the other party's request.

Go Edith! I'm really impressed with her logic. And your post about the dinner was hilarious . . . I hope that your guests were simarily entertained. If Edith turns out to be a hard-nosed negotiator, maybe she can get a good deal for the distribution of her new video, Nursing Mothers Gone Wild, Special Edition: Dinner Parties.
